The face of a drawing, can be very important. I will also say that some artists avoid it all together, this can work, but whether you are doing a very stylized look, a cartoony look, or a more realistic sketch, it can be important to create an expressive and beautiful face.
Also, I will say that I am no expert. I am a student of art also, and I only share what I have learned here on the site, and work towards learning more.
This page will explore some sketches to give you an idea of how to draw each element of the face, and head i.e.: hair with more intense instruction coming in my book. Eyes, the window to the soul and a very big part of how to draw faces - so if you want to add soul to your fairy faces you just have to master the eye. Eyes are bright and shiny, or hooded and mysterious, dark and smoky, so many interesting ways to draw an eye. You want to illustrate the liquid and reflective quality of the eye. This is an area that you should invest some time in learning to draw.
Most people don't think of the nose as particularly beautiful, but these images will show that they can be. Shading and highlighting is the most important part of drawing a nose. In fact highlighting and shading is very important in the whole process of how to draw faces.
Lips are sexy, and drawing the mouth to create those pouty lips, or pressed lips, or an open mouth? How do you draw mouths? Click through to see the practice. Remember for more practice to get some make-up ads from magazines, and draw faces until you are sooooo confident!
Hair is one of my favorite things to draw. Hair can hang straight and shiny, flow in the wind, ooze into beautiful curls, there is no end of the magic that hair will create in your drawings.
All of this should be put into a specialist book, and that is coming as mentioned above, but some of these great drawing skills are covered in my huge fairy drawing book. So don't miss all the great instruction that will have you drawing at the level of all this practice.
In your learning how to draw faces there are many styles and levels. You will notice that there are faces that are just light sketches, and some are more involved with heavier shading and more precise highlighting, and it is up to you how much you want to learn. Another way of saying this is that you can have a more illustrative style, or a more realistic style.
The great thing about drawing and being an artist is that you get to choose.
