Dragon Picture

When I look at a thunder and lightning storm outside my window I can see a dragon picture.

Do you like to draw?

and do you like to draw dragons?

You might think to yourself - how do I make a dragon picture?

and...

What kind of Dragon shall I draw?

Fire Breathing Dragons

You might think about fire-breathing dragons and start with that.

But what is that fire-breathing dragon doing?

Is he crouched in a cave over tons of treasure?

- breathing fire to keep any treasure hunters out?

That would certainly keep me out.

Is the dragon fighting an armed knight with a huge bronze sword? That would be a great dragon picture.

Is the fire-breathing dragon fighting a farmer with a pitch fork?

Could be.

When you get an idea!

Once you get an idea like that...I will make a suggestion, go for it!

Sometimes just a little idea like that can start you on your way to making dragon art.

Artists have been drawing dragons for centuries and we never seem to get sick and tired of them.

And neither do the viewers. We will always want dragon art and dragon artists.

A dragon is never boring.

Trust

Where do we get ideas for drawing a picture?

We use our mind's eye.

What does that mean?

Well I know I sort of squint and let my mind start the process of creating the dragon picture with say...

A large green and blue dragon swimming in the sea.

In my imagination the Dragon is about to overtake a viking ship.

Maybe in my mind's eye I can see a ...

large red and brown dragon circling over a medieval town or castle.

Can you see the people running?

Your imagination's mind's eye will never let you down if you let it loose.

Most of us think too much.

When you get an idea just start with it.

Trust It

Don't tell yourself it isn't any good.

That's what many humans do - they tell themselves negative things and then they never try.

Have faith that as you draw that idea - whether stupid or not - other ideas will come to you...

and you will end up with dragon art.

For practice drawing and coloring, ah yes... color.

For some ideas on drawing, and the practice of coloring, and to see a dragon picture

Pencil Crayons

I love my prismacolor pencil crayons, and there is nothing I like better than going through an arts and crafts store.

Watch out, this store is no exception, and there are so many great items.

Blending Color

I have a page called How to Color and I do give some ideas there about color and am adding a page or two about blending color and oh shading.

I love shading - that is where you create the action in any picture.

So, use the color for shading, too, check out my Color Wheel for a good reference of how to blend color.

Need some fairies?

Sometimes you need a Fairy or a person to be in the dragon picture.

To draw a figure for your great dragon art, you might want to practice your figure drawing at the link.

And drawing a fairy requires even more practice. So,if fairy pictures are part of your plans, this page might give you some ideas.

Does that person need to be riding a horse? Here is my Draw a Horse page, and you might have fun putting that into your work.

A dragon picture might need a Flower? Well, you could use flowers on a dragon-picture. Maybe not, but this link will teach some basics about Flower Drawing.

History Buff?

If you follow the link to my Dragon History you will find some wonderful pages about the history of dragons.

I have a new page calledDragon Drawing and you will really be able to create your own dragon art with the philosophy you have learned here, and the basics at the new page.
