Unicorns

Are unicorns real? Here you will find out about the unicorn legend, and a bit of history.

Unicorns were known to represent purity and healing.

With regard to whether there were real unicorns, they were mentioned in lots of literature - and....well there isn't any evidence, but we could believe.

They were hunted profusely, and it is said that is why we do not have any more.

A unicorn legend - which many people believed, is that they had healing properties in the unicorn horns.

People took the horns and ground them up into magic medicine.

Others reported that the really Beautiful ones had a huge jewel lodged right underneath the horn.

Unicorns can be ferocious...

They could actually be very ferocious when approached by hunters, and could indeed attack, but this is where the Mythology about young women comes into play.

Spirituality And Purity of the Unicorn

If you put a pure young woman (again the spiritual aspect) under a tree, any Unicorn in the forest, would be lured to her, immediately putting his head in her lap and going to sleep.

Apparently, beautiful young maidens were his achilles heel, or his soft spot.

In history it was the Medieval legend that made them most famous.

What Unicorns look like?

They were usually depicted as a large white horse with a single horn on its forehead. It has also been described as having the hind legs of an antelope, the tail of a lion, and the beard of a goat.

The stories of many Far East cultures, claim that some of the unicorn mythology about these beautiful creatures may have been created from distorted reports of rhinoceroses.

We just don't believe that, and if you are a believer in fantasy unicorns, we know that they were everything we have pictured in our imaginations.

Below you will see how my imagination is expressed in my coloring pages.

My unicorn-coloring-pages link will take you to some pictures that are much more in line with our imaginations.

Enjoy! The image has changed from a goat-like creature, or an antelope, and we see him today as a marvelous equine (or horse) sometimes they were portrayed as unicorns with wings like Pegasus, and shining white with his purity.

Some classic images are available in my Coloring Pages at the link above.

And as I mentioned

Pegasus is often associated with a kind of flying fantasy horse.

Fantasy Flying Horse?

You can read all about him at the the above link. You will also find pictures of him at my Pegasus Coloring Pages If you are interested in delving into more history of the unicorn please enjoy some more Unicorns in my section on the really ancient ones.

Other Magical Creatures

I love Mermaids, and Selkies, and the Sea Gods ruling the deep and all the Merfolk.

Of course I really do love Fairies, and the history of the word fairy.

One of my favorite kind of characters in any myth or fairy tale is an adventurer, sometimes called a pirate, with stories about warriors and amazons.
