Sleeping Beauty

A Re-Telling

This is the story of Sleeping Beauty - one of my absolute favorites.

There are good fairies, evil fairies and a beautiful princess who all come together in a fantastic castle.

There is a hero or prince with a beautiful and powerful horse, which he rides into battle against the evil fairy and a dragon.

This is what my site is about the fairies, the tales and their art. Please envision the art from this fantastic tale.

You can find images of fairies and fairy tales such as Sleeping Beauty in the Coloring Pages, the paper dolls (see link at bottom) and the card-making and theScrapbooking Supplies area.

You will even find a wonderful How To Draw area with ideas and instruction for creating any of your favorite fairy tale characters.

Once upon a time...

there was Sleeping Beauty, the tale...

A long time ago there was a King and Queen. They were lonely for a child and every day hoped and prayed that they might have one.

One day while in the backyard of the Palace the Queen talked to a frog who told her that very soon she would have a child of her own.

What the frog said did come true and the King and Queen celebrated the birth of a very beautiful baby girl.

The King ordered a big feast and could not contain himself for the joy he felt. He invited all his friends and relatives and also the wise women of the Kingdom.

In the fairytale Sleeping Beauty, the Wise Women were actually Fairies.

However, there were 13 Wise Women and he only had twelve golden plates for them to eat off of, and therefore had to choose one Fairy not to invite.

The one they chose not to invite was a little cranky anyway.

Well, the party was going great, and eleven of the fairies had given their magic gifts and given their promises to the baby, such as virtue.

One fairy gave beauty, a third riches, and the like.

Basically, the baby was given everything that a person could wish for.

All of a sudden the thirteenth fairy who had not been invited crashed the party. She was angry for not being invited and wanted to wreak havoc on the young baby's life.

She announced that "The King's daughter shall in her fifteenth year prick herself with a spindle, and fall down dead."

With that she left in anger.

Everybody was shocked, but the twelfth fairy who had not yet given her gift softened the blow with a good wish and said that "it shall not be death, but a deep sleep of a hundred years, into which the princess shall fall."

his is where the idea of her becoming a Sleeping Beauty comes into play.

The King ordered that every spinning wheel with a spindle in the whole kingdom shall be burned in a fire.

For years as the princess grew up she turned out to have all of the other gifts, she was beautiful, modest, good-natured and wise.

Everyone that met her fell in love with her. The perfect teenager.

One day when she was fifteen years old, the King and Queen were not at home and the Princess was exploring parts of the castle that she was not allowed to.

She came across an old tower and continued to explore. She climbed the narrow staircase and found a little door to a little room she had never seen before.

Inside of the room sat an old lady spinning at a spinning wheel.

The Princess said hello and asked what she was working on. The Princess had never seen a spinning wheel and wanted to spin too.

The old lady smiled and let her get started and within minutes (just as the evil fairy had proclaimed) she pricked her finger on the spindle.

Right at that moment the Princess fell down on a bed and fell into a deep sleep.

The sleep extended over the whole palace, and even the King and Queen, who had just come home began to go to sleep along with the whole court.

The horses went to sleep in the stable, the dogs in the yard, the pigeons on the roof, the flies on the wall, and even the fire that was flaming on the hearth became quiet and slept.

The wind died down outside of the castle and not a leaf on the trees moved again.

So the Sleeping Beauty spell really put the whole kingdom to sleep.

Around the outside of the castle a huge hedge of thorns began to grow, and every year became higher and higher. The castle and hedge of thorns were also protected by an evil dragon.

Apparently, for years the story of the beautiful princess sleeping in the Castle drew young princes from around the neighborhood who tried to get into the Castle, battling the dragon, and get through the thorns.

However, they failed.

After long, long years another son of a King came into the country and heard the tales of the beautiful princess, or Sleeping Beauty, sleeping for a hundred years.

He had also heard that many of the young men before him who had tried to get inside the castle had perished in battle with the dragon, or in the terrible thorns.

The good fairies knew that one particular prince was the true love of sleeping beauty, and they provided him with a magic sword.

This sword helped the young prince kill the dragon, as he was cutting through the thorns, and the spell that had been set for a hundred years, and since it was that time now, the young prince stood in front of the thorns and started cutting, and as soon as he did that, they turned into beautiful flowers and parted to let him in.

He walked through the courtyards into the castle and saw all of the servants sleeping. He went on farther, and in the great hall he saw the whole of the court lying asleep, and up by the throne lay the king and queen.

Then he went on still farther and all was so quiet that a breath could be heard, and at last he came to the tower, and opened the door into the little room where the princess was sleeping.

There she lay, so beautiful that he could not turn his eyes away, and he stooped down and gave her a kiss. As soon as he kissed her, she opened her eyes and awoke, and looked at him sweetly.

Sleeping Beauty was awake.

They went downstairs to find everyone in the castle waking up, and the Prince and Princess were married and lived happily ever after.

The tale of Sleeping Beauty is one of those magical tales you never forget.
