Rumpelstiltskin
A Re-Telling of the Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale
Rumpelstiltskin, sometimes spelled rumpelstiltzkin is one of those well known fairy tales. I am offering the story of Rumpelstiltskin, in order to inspire the coloring or drawing that might come from the wonderful images that this story will create. There once was a Miller who was very poor, but who had a beautiful daughter. One day he needed to ask something of the King and though he was not a very important man, he told him that he had a daughter who could weave straw into pure gold. The King was very impressed by this and told the man to bring his daughter to the Palace the next day. He had his doubts as to whether this was true. The King wanted to test her and the girl was brought to the Palace and put into a room full of straw. There was a spinning-wheel in the room and she was told to work at the straw and turn it all into gold by the next day or she would be put to death. So, from one lie now the poor girl was sitting alone in this room full of straw and she was very frightened. She began to cry, knowing that she could not spin straw into gold. All of a sudden a little man came in the room and said "Good evening miss, why are you crying?" The girl explained the situation and the little man (also known as a dwarf) said "What will you give me if I do it for you?" The girl was willing to give him whatever she had. She offered her necklace. The little man took the necklace and sat down to spin all that straw into gold. When the morning came all of the reels on the spinning wheel were full of gold. The king saw the gold and he was amazed. This was awesome, he thought. Unfortunately for the girl, the King was a rather greedy man and he had the girl taken to a bigger room also full of straw. Guess what - he expected her to spin that whole room of straw into gold or pay with her life. The poor miller's daughter was in a real dilemma. What could she do? Again, the little man came into the room and asked her what she could give him? She replied that she had a nice ring? He took it and started to spin all the straw into gold. It worked, but guess what happened in the morning? The King wanted more, and took her to an even larger room filled with straw. He told her that if she managed to spin all of this straw into gold he would make her his wife. Now the King was interested in all the gold she would make and didn't mind that she was just a poor miller's daughter. When the girl was alone in the room - again, the little man came in. He asked..."what will you give me if I spin the straw for you this time?" She said "I have nothing left to give you." So, the little man (dwarf) came up with a plan. His pinched little face cracked with an evil-looking smile. "Then promise me, if you should become queen, to give me your first child." The Miller's daughter thought about that and realized that she might never have a child. She had to get out of this situation so she agreed. In the morning the King was delighted and he married the pretty miller's daughter. Now after a year or so, the Queen was quite happy and had completely forgotten about the little man. She enjoyed her days as the Queen and then even more when she had a little child. The day of her child's birth the little man appeared. After all she had promised to give her first child to the little man. The Queen was so upset, she didn't know what to do and begged the dwarf to please let her out of the deal. She wanted her little child more than any riches in the world. She pleaded for mercy. Finally, he gave her a chance to get out of it. He said, "I will give you three days. If by that time you find out my name, then you shall keep your child." So, the Queen thought all night of what the dwarf's name could be. She sent out messengers all over the land to try and figure it out. What could his name be? In the morning when the little man came back, she asked all kinds of unusual names that she had heard of, such as Caspar, Melchior, Baltazar, and said all of the other names she knew. Every time the little man said, "That is not my name." He kind of laughed and jumped up and down too! This annoyed the Queen. She tried again the next night, and sent messengers even farther to come up with different names. In the morning of the second day. The Queen tried some more really unusual names, like Shortribs, or Sheepshanks, or Laceleg, but he always answered .... "That is not my name." On the third day the messenger came back again, and said "I have not been able to find a single new name, but as I came to a hill at the end of the forest, I saw a little house, and in front of the house dancing around a fire I saw a little man singing a little rhyme" The Queen listened. The rhyme was "Today I bake, tomorrow brew,The next I'll have the young queen's child.Ha, glad am I that no one knewThat Rumpelstiltskin I am styled." You may imagine how glad the Queen was when she heard that strange name. When the little man came back the next morning, the Queen felt more confident. First she asked is your name Conrad? "No" the little man answered. "Is your name Harry?" inquired the Queen. "No" "Perhaps your name is Rumpelstiltskin?" The little man went into a fit. "The devil has told you that! The devil has told you" he cried and got so angry that he plunged his foot into the earth. He plunged it so deep that his whole leg went in, and then in rage he pulled at his other leg so hard with both hands that he tore himself in two. That was the end of the little man.
