Pirate History

Pirate History is all about privateers, adventurers or buccaneers.

This page is primarily about famous woman pirates and adventuresses, or women of great adventure and courage.

There have been many women of the past who didn't want to live within the confines of society's idea of what a woman should be.

Some of the ladies you will meet on this page were willing to dress as men in order to go out into the world and fulfill their passions.

Many were pirates, and will will explore this little bit of Pirate History.

An adventuress was willing to go to any lengths to escape her bonds.

Some were Mythology

Now I will be honest some of these women are partially mythology and some just speculation, but there have always been legends about adventuresses in almost any culture you can name, and that is what is so exciting about Pirate History.

Whether they actually lived or not their exploits have been documented throughout history.

Nobody really liked a pirate or a viking, or a medieval queen that led soldiers into battle, but let's keep in mind that those were the times in which they lived.

An adventuress was willing to be unpopular.

This is why I have chosen the subject of Pirate History on a site primarily about fairies, fairy tales and their art.

Lady Pirates make great subjects for art work - in my opinion.

Famous Woman Pirates

Anne Bonny

Anne Bonny born in 1697 and died in 1720 - so I guess she didn't live very long, but she did have a lot of adventures, and was an Adventuress.

As a young girl she disguised herself as a man, sailed on a ship called the Revenge with a pirate named Calico Jack Rackham.

Throughout Pirate History there were rumors of young girls doing this and becoming pirates.

After a major battle she was captured and arrested by the British.

Somehow she was released and the tale goes that then she disappeared.

There are rumours after that she became Bartholomew Roberts (again disguised as a man) or Black Bart as he was called.

The reasons are many that people thought Black Bart was actually Anne Bonny.

He was always well dressed...

Had excellent manners

Never shared his cabin with anyone.

He did not drink alcohol - and I guess that was strange for a pirate.

He had excellent nice neat handwriting

Never grew a beard and loved beautiful classical music.

He also had given an order to his men that if he should be killed in battle he should be thrown into the sea right away.

That is eventually what happened and it was never proven that Black Bart was not actually Anne Bonny, a great Adventuress.

I guess that is what she wanted.

I have an adventure in Pirate History at my very exciting page with a Lady Pirate Paper Doll.

Grace O'Malley

Another girl pirate was Grace O'Malley.

Grace did not dress up like a man she was the Pirate Queen. So some Pirate History illustrating that a woman was happy to be a woman, but still a pirate.

She had over two hundred men working for her, and a fleet of ships under her control.

Not only that, she actually had an island and her own castle. She was a true Adventuress.

She was a pirate because she would lead her ships out into the ocean around her island and meet other ships.

She would demand payment for passing that area and would attack ships that were not British.

Grace O'Malley actually lived for a good long time and went down in Pirate History as the infamous Pirate Queen.

Girl Warrior

Another young girl who became a warrior was Joan of Arc.

You have probably heard of her. She was born in 1412 and died about 1431.

Again she did not live very long either. Well warriors did not.

Joan had visions from God about how to lead the French soldiers against their enemies.

She led many battles, and did dress in armor like a man, but eventually was arrested and executed.

Boy are we lucky we live today and don't have to go to those lengths to follow our dreams or to be an Adventuress.

Today we can get an education and lead companies or start our own businesses. We can make choices for ourselves.

These women had to be outcasts and go against all of society to make their own choices. They had to become part of Pirate History in order to stand up and follow their dreams.

So women enjoy!!

Ancient Greek Teacher

Back in Ancient Greece there was a woman, not mythological, she apparently was real.

Her name was Hypatia and was born in 370 and died in 415. She was about 40 or 50 which was pretty good for those days.

Hypatia lived in Alexandria in Greece and she was not a warrior, although she was eventually put to death, but it was due to the fact that she was just so smart.

Hypatia was a teacher, Platonic Philosopher, and mathematician.

She explained principles of philosophy, literature and science that many people did not understand.

People came from miles around to study with her. She was an Adventuress of the mind.

She went down in history as a very brilliant person. Hypatia was probably the only one who went down in history in a positive way, not really infamous in Pirate History.

Lady Celtic Chieftain

Boudicca was a real woman who was born in 60 AD - they don't know when exactly she died, but she was a Celtic Chieftain.

She led many great battles in Scotland.

The stories say that she was very frightening to look at on her charging stallion.

While the above examples were or were rumored to be real people there were many mythological stories about women who were not quite real - maybe fairies - or at least greek or norse goddesses.

Greek and Norse Amazons

The Old Norse (that means the Norsemen or the times of the Vikings) they believed in very strong women fairies called Valrkyrja or Valkyries.

The norse believed that these fairies rode wolves in wolf packs. For more Fairies History, and history about the word fairy follow the links.

In Gothic times (this actually means the time of the Goths and some say medieval).

They had a another word for these magical and strong women fairies "weelcyrge".

Then there was Greek Mythology which explained the existence of Amazons.

They believed the Amazons had their own island and rode winged horses.

As you can see being an Adventuress was not always the most comfortable lifestyle, but these women wanted to live life on their own terms.
There are so many other characters in the Fairy realm, and I particularly love the unicorns, and have written pages about ancient unicorns, far east unicorns, medieval unicorns, and even than flying unicorn pegasus.

But don't forget about mermaids, merfolk, sea gods and selkies.

Have you got a passion?

Many women have a passion, and if you have an interest that is so strong it is hard for you to ignore, you should research that idea, whether it is a particular kind of job you want, or an interest you are not quite sure of where to start read my About Me page for some ideas of how I did it.

Remember we have the whole internet to help us find anything.

I know as a mother I want my girls to follow their dreams and do what ever it is that will help them fulfill their lives. I think they should study some Pirate History, but am grateful they don't have to live it.

If your passion is Art, then you are in the right place. Coloring is a good place to start.
