Norse Dragons

Norse dragons were a very central part of norse mythology or viking mythology - a viking warrior wanted to travel in their dragon decorated viking ships - find out why...

Norse Dragons ruled many parts of the Viking World - even the norse gods feared them...read on

Firstly,

The Norsemen or Vikings thought of the world as a giant tree.Yggdrasil was the tree with huge branches and deep roots.

This was considered to be the structure upon which all life depended, or the order holding everything together.

Under the tree, biting at the roots, was the first Dragon who was thought to be constantly working to rip apart the Order.

Dragons were under the ground - wow!

The Viking Universe

Dragon at the bottom of Ocean

In another story of norse mythology, a huge viking dragon was at the bottom of the cold ocean.

The Norse God Thor, or the God of Thunder...

managed to pull up the mighty beast once and tried to battle it.

He did not win

That Dragon is still in the depths of the ocean causing storms and huge waves. This is why major parts of viking mythology revolve around the sea.

These ocean-going vikings always adorned their huge viking ships with frightening dragons, in order to scare off the evil beasts.

They were always on guard and deeply believed that dragons were under the waves.

Another section of this site describes battles in the sea between gods and Dragons besides the Norse Dragons page, and that is the Greek Dragons page.

Back to the Vikings

Ancient Scandinavians named their warships after Dragons.

They even decorated their ships with images and carvings of terrifying dragons.

You can see that many cultures believed in Dragons, and believed very strongly that they were real.

Everyone accused them of much mischief, and I have produced coloring pages for you to enjoy at my dragon coloring page, or if you want to create your own dragon art you can get ideas of how to create a dragon picture, and even how to draw a dragon.
