Dragon History

Dragon History begins with all the stories about Creation, the Dragons that caused the creation of Earth itself.

Many of the tales tell of great fierce dragons mixing with the elements themselves, so Dragon History begins as early as the beginning of time...

or so the stories go.

Chaos

Fire, water, air and deep under the earth.

Dragons have represented chaos, and lack of any kind of order.

So you have many tales of the fight between good and evil.

The swirling of great battles in the clouds.

Dragons churning with the gods below the sea.

Some dragons chewing at the roots of order underneath the ground.

Many dragons spewing fire and causing thunder and lightning.

People were very afraid of what a dragon out of control could do to our world.

Folklore

In order to study Dragon History even archaeologists have looked for clues in ancient folklore.

They found seven clay tablets in Mesopotamia with ancient writing mentioning Dragons.

These writings were about huge battles at the beginning of time over what creatures would rule and how to create the earth.

Dragon History actually illustrates for the people of the time, a version of the "big-bang" theory, where everything was chaos even before the Gods who brought order.

Remember these were tribal people with very little knowledge of the world.

They believed in many gods, whereas most of us today believe in one God.

Thank goodness He created order out of chaos.

Below I am giving you one of the writings.

Just like the internet, people used to read these things on chunks of stone...

hear it from a visiting caravan...

then tell the stories around the campfires at night.

That is what is called a verbal tradition

If you study Dragon History or any kind of history much of what we know was passed to us by stories handed down from mothers and fathers to their children...

by a verbal tradition.

Dragon Story

"In the beginning, when all was dark and formless, two primal beings came into existence.

One was male, the spirit of fresh water and the void,

the other was female the spirit of salt water and chaos, and it was a Dragon."

"It was composed of elements of dangerous creatures yet to come:

It posessed the jaws of a crocodile, the teeth of a lion, the wings of a bat,

the legs of a lizard, the talons of an eagle, the body of a python, the horns of a bull.

The Dragon's name was Tiamat."

If you are a history nut check out my Norse Dragons section. Keep in mind the Norsemen were the Vikings. And even they were afraid of Dragons.

The Scandinavian countries had a rich heritage of tales, and they travelled the world, picking up the idea of serptent characteristics.

I always loved the far eastern tradition of dragons so check out Oriental Dragons and their interesting beliefs. They were honored as deities, or gods.

For your more standard knights in armor and small town Dragons check out British Dragons and European Dragons

Those Were Tough Times

The European and British Dragons were the major characters in stories showing that the inhabitants of small towns had a pecking order for sacrificial feeding of them.

A town would first feed them all of their livestock, and then start with the young maidens.

Not a practice many of us today would approve of, but I guess they had no choice!

Boy those were tough times!

Knights who slayed a dragon were heros, and any who manged to stay alive were treated like royalty.

They were usually rewarded with feasts and riches.
